Founded in 1898, Peking University (PKU) is the first national university in Chinese modern history, with a high reputation in and outside China, owing to the abundant teaching resources and outstanding research level. Peking University now consists of 31 colleges and 14 departments, offering 101 undergraduate programs, 224 postgraduate programs, and 202 doctoral programs.

In 2004, there were over 4000 international students from about 80 countries, including 1825 long-term students and approximately 2,600 short-term students. Among them, there was 1,292 Degree-Seeking students, including those seeking undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral degree.
